When my friend gave me the idea of building a rain gutter garden on my fence I was all for it! What an awesome idea! Not only do you get to grow produce, but it’s creative, inexpensive, and oh so cute to look at! I love how I was able to maximize the space in my yard by adding a rain gutter garden to my fence. I can’t help but smile everytime I walk by and I see our lettuce, flowers, and strawberries growing. It’s been a popular fixture among our neighbors as well as our kids. I decided to write this post because a few of my neighbors also want to build their own rain gutter gardens and I want you to too! Read on to learn more!

Alright, here’s the list of stuff to purchase! We purchased everything from our personal Disneyland (Home depot). Everything was literally under $100. The total cost depends on how many planters you want to build, but you can build one for just under $20! 

Supplies

1. 5’x10’ ft Vinyl Gutter  
2. White Vinyl end cap set (2-pack)
3. 3 White Vinyl hidden hanger 
4. 6 Screws 
5. Drill

Alright, now that you purchased your materials let’s start building! 

Notes

If your walls or fence aren’t big enough, you can always cut the rain gutter to fit. The key to growing plants are sunlight, good soil, and water! Make sure to keep that in mind when selecting a location to install your rain gutter garden. 

Instructions

1. Find a good location for your rain gutter garden. Anywhere with  6 hours+ sunlight is ideal! 
2. Drill a couple of holes in the gutters for drainage. 
3. Mount the brackets at a slight 10 degree bias to allow drainage. 
4. Snap the gutter on the mount 
5. Insert end caps onto the gutters. 
6. Grab some good potting mix and fertilizer! 
7. Plant some vegetables and fruits! 
8. Water & maintain!
